Ahmad ibn Muhammad Ali al-Halwani al-Rifa'i of Damascus, "al-Halwani the Elder", was shaykh of the Qur'an readers of Syria. Born in Damascus in 1228 AH, he travelled to Mecca in 1254 and read the seven and then the ten readings with Abu al-Fawz Ahmad al-Marzuqi. He later taught in Mecca in his teacher's place for many years before settling in Damascus. His students include his son Muhammad Salim al-Halwani, Ahmad Duhman and Jamal al-Din al-Qasimi. He wrote a poem on the reading of Warsh and al-Minha al-Saniyya with its commentary. He died in Damascus on 26 Jumada al-Akhira 1307 AH.
