Maryam is a surah of births and of parents: Zakariyya asking for a son in old age, Maryam given one with no father at all, and Ibrahim leaving his father for the sake of the truth. It was the surah recited to the Negus, and this map follows the five lives it moves through.
At this pace the whole surah takes 33 study days.
Study days are days you actually sit down to memorise — miss one and the plan simply moves with you.
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ كٓهيعٓصٓ…عَلَيْهِ يَوْمَ وُلِدَ وَيَوْمَ يَمُوتُ وَيَوْمَ يُبْعَثُ حَيًّۭا
A whispered prayer for an heir, the sign of three nights, and the boy given wisdom as a child.
Study days 1-5
وَٱذْكُرْ فِى ٱلْكِتَٰبِ مَرْيَمَ إِذِ ٱنتَبَذَتْ مِنْ أَهْلِهَا…إِنَّا نَحْنُ نَرِثُ ٱلْأَرْضَ وَمَنْ عَلَيْهَا وَإِلَيْنَا يُرْجَعُونَ
Her withdrawal, the annunciation, the birth by the palm trunk, and the infant who spoke in the cradle.
Study days 6-14
وَٱذْكُرْ فِى ٱلْكِتَٰبِ إِبْرَٰهِيمَ ۚ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ صِدِّيقًۭا نَّبِيًّا…لَهُم مِّن رَّحْمَتِنَا وَجَعَلْنَا لَهُمْ لِسَانَ صِدْقٍ عَلِيًّۭا
The gentlest argument in the Qur'an, refused, and the son who withdraws without insult.
Study days 14-17
وَٱذْكُرْ فِى ٱلْكِتَٰبِ مُوسَىٰٓ ۚ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ مُخْلَصًۭا وَكَانَ…بَيْنَهُمَا فَٱعْبُدْهُ وَٱصْطَبِرْ لِعِبَٰدَتِهِۦ ۚ هَلْ تَعْلَمُ لَهُۥ سَمِيًّۭا
Musa, Harun, Isma'il and Idris — those upon whom Allah bestowed favour, who fell prostrate weeping.
Study days 17-22
وَيَقُولُ ٱلْإِنسَٰنُ أَءِذَا مَا مِتُّ لَسَوْفَ أُخْرَجُ حَيًّا…تُحِسُّ مِنْهُم مِّنْ أَحَدٍ أَوْ تَسْمَعُ لَهُمْ رِكْزًۢا
The denial of resurrection answered, the claim of a son refuted, and the surah's last, quiet question.
Study days 22-33
Every prophet named here is introduced by his relationship to a parent or a child, which is what makes the closing warning about those who abandoned the prayer land as hard as it does.
