Al-Fil recalls an event within living memory of the first listeners: an army came to destroy the Ka'bah in the year the Prophet was born, and was stopped by birds. Five verses, told as something they already knew.

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ أَلَمْ تَرَ كَيْفَ فَعَلَ…وَأَرْسَلَ عَلَيْهِمْ طَيْرًا أَبَابِيلَ
How your Lord dealt with the companions of the elephant — their plot made to go astray, and birds sent in flocks.

تَرْمِيهِم بِحِجَارَةٍۢ مِّن سِجِّيلٍۢ…فَجَعَلَهُمْ كَعَصْفٍۢ مَّأْكُولٍۭ
Striking them with stones of baked clay, and leaving them like chewed stalks.

The surah asks 'have you not seen', not 'have you not heard' — it is addressed to a generation for whom this was recent news, not history.
