Al-Bayyinah makes a precise historical point: the People of the Book did not split before the clear proof came to them, they split after it. It then states what they were commanded in the first place, and divides everyone by their response.

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ لَمْ يَكُنِ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟…حُنَفَآءَ وَيُقِيمُوا۟ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ وَيُؤْتُوا۟ ٱلزَّكَوٰةَ ۚ وَذَٰلِكَ دِينُ ٱلْقَيِّمَةِ
A messenger reciting purified scriptures; they divided only after it came, though they were commanded only to worship sincerely.
Study days 1-2
إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ مِنْ أَهْلِ ٱلْكِتَٰبِ وَٱلْمُشْرِكِينَ فِى…ٱللَّهُ عَنْهُمْ وَرَضُوا۟ عَنْهُ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ لِمَنْ خَشِىَ رَبَّهُۥ
The two verdicts stated plainly, and the reward: gardens beneath which rivers flow, Allah pleased with them and they with Him.
Study days 2-3
What they were commanded is given in one verse — sincere worship, prayer, zakat — and called 'the upright religion', with nothing added.
