A Maliki jurist and reader from Bani Husayn in Asyut who memorised the Qur'an as a boy, moved to Cairo in 1877 and studied tajwid and the readings with his uncle Hasan Khalaf al-Husayni. He headed the Maliki scholars at al-Azhar and in 1906 became shaykh of all Egyptian Qur'an schools; he wrote out by hand the mushaf printed by order of King Fuad. His works include Fath al-Majid on tajwid. He died in Cairo in Dhu al-Hijja 1357 AH.
