On Saturday 1 August 2026, Kuttab Colorado held a free online Quran competition on Surah Al-Kahf (سورة الكهف, "The Cave"). Reciters of every age took part, from young memorisers to adult learners, and ten of them earned an official Certificate of Excellence.

Why Surah Al-Kahf
Surah Al-Kahf is the eighteenth surah of the Quran, and reciting it on Friday is a long-standing practice among Muslims. It holds four narratives — the companions of the cave, the man with the two gardens, Musa and al-Khidr, and Dhul-Qarnayn — each turning on a different test: faith, wealth, knowledge and power.
That structure is part of why it works so well as a memorisation target. It is long enough to be a real commitment and short enough to be finished, and its stories give a young memoriser something to hold onto between verses instead of a stretch of undifferentiated text.
How the competition ran
Entry was free and everything happened online, so nobody had to be in Denver to take part. There were no age brackets: a seven-year-old and an adult learner entered the same competition. Each reciter was judged on three things — memorisation, accuracy and tajweed — and the judging panel scored every recitation against the same criteria.
Every winner received an Elitch Gardens season pass, complimentary Quran lessons, and their official Kuttab Colorado certificate.
