Abu al-Abbas Ahmad al-Zawawi, from the Zawawa region near Bejaia, was regarded as the leading Qur'an reciter of the Maghreb in the eighth Hijri century. He read with Abu al-Hasan Ali ibn Sulayman al-Qurtubi, Abu Ja'far ibn al-Zubayr and Abu Marwan al-Shirishi, and Ibn Khaldun read the Qur'an with him. He wrote on the readings and Arabic in verse and prose, and drowned with the fleet of the Marinid sultan Abu al-Hasan around 750 AH.
