Biography

Abu Muhammad (also Abu al-Qasim) al-Qasim ibn Firruh al-Ru'ayni al-Shatibi was a master of the Qur'an readings and author of the poem 'Hirz al-Amani', known as the Shatibiyya. Born in Xativa in eastern al-Andalus in 538 AH, he read with Ibn Hudhayl in Valencia, then moved to Egypt and settled in Cairo. His students included Alam al-Din al-Sakhawi and his son-in-law al-Kamal Ali ibn Shuja' al-Darir. He also wrote 'Aqilat Atrab al-Qasa'id' on orthography and 'Nazimat al-Zuhr' on verse counting, and died in Cairo in 590 AH, buried in al-Qarafa.
