One of the two transmitters of Nafi's reading and the leading reader of Egypt, born in Qift in Upper Egypt in 110 AH. He travelled to Medina to read with Nafi', then returned to Egypt, where he became its chief teacher of recitation. Abu Ya'qub al-Azraq was his best-known student. He died in Fustat in 197 AH.
