Abd al-Basit Hashim was a blind Egyptian reader from Shubra Bas (Shibin al-Kom, Menoufia), named after his guardian Hashim Muhammad Ali. He memorised the Qur'an as a child, read the readings with Ahmad Abd al-Ghani Abd al-Rahim in Asyut and later Mustafa Hasan Sa'id in Qena, earned a doctorate in tafsir from al-Azhar and lectured there. He died in Cairo.
