A philologist, grammarian and Qur'an reader born and raised in Baghdad; he studied language with al-Jawaliqi, grammar with Ibn al-Shajari and Ibn al-Khashshab, and the readings with Sibt al-Khayyat. He moved to Damascus and became one of its leading scholars; al-Sakhawi was among his students.
