Abu al-Aswad Zalim ibn Amr al-Du'ali was a Successor from Basra, born about sixteen years before the Hijra. He learned from Umar, Ali, Ubayy ibn Ka'b, Ibn Mas'ud and others, and served as judge of Basra under Ali. He is credited with founding Arabic grammar and with first marking the Qur'an's vowels with dots. He died of plague in Basra in 69 AH.
