A Maliki jurist and Egyptian reader born in the village of Bani Husayn in Upper Egypt who studied at al-Azhar and was appointed head of all Egyptian Qur'an circles (shaykh umum al-maqari'). He wrote out a Qur'an by hand in the Uthmani orthography, which the Egyptian government adopted as the basis of the King Fuad Mushaf. His works include al-Kawakib al-Durriyya, Fath al-Majid fi Ilm al-Tajwid, Irshad al-Hayran fi Rasm al-Qur'an and al-Qawl al-Sadid.
