Shaykh al-Islam Zakariya ibn Muhammad al-Ansari, born in Sunayka, Sharqiyya, Egypt, in 824 AH, and educated at al-Azhar. He studied with Ibn Hajar, al-Mahalli and al-Kafiyaji, and read the Qur'anic readings with Tahir al-Nuwayri and Ahmad al-Qalqili among others. He was chief Shafi'i judge for about twenty years and wrote many works that became standard for the Shafi'is. He died in Cairo on 3 Dhu al-Hijja 926 AH.
